Today, the role of the hairdresser is no longer limited to simply cutting hair. They are also a confidant, an advisor, and often the first professional to whom clients confide their concerns about the health of their hair. Aware of this evolution, the New Hair Graft clinic organized a conference on Wednesday, September 24th, for students at Says Lounge, a professional hairdressing school in Ebène.

This initiative aims to integrate hair loss health and prevention into students' curricula, preparing them to expertly meet the expectations of their future clients. This collaboration marks a first in Mauritius, establishing a practice where doctors share their expertise with future hairdressing professionals. New Hair Graft's ambition is to sustain this program and make it a regular feature in several vocational training institutions.

Hair salons are often the first place where the sensitive topic of hair loss is broached. This free presentation is part of New Hair Graft's strategy to make hair transplantation more accessible in Mauritius. It allows future hair aesthetics professionals to learn how to effectively advise their clients.

By raising their awareness of the signs of alopecia, understanding its causes, and guiding their clients appropriately, they gain legitimacy and strengthen client trust. The goal is to provide them with the necessary tools to distinguish a cosmetic problem requiring medical attention—a crucial distinction for personalized, high-quality care.

“We have always sought to offer training that prepares our students not only for hairdressing techniques, but also for the complex realities of their profession. This collaboration with New Hair Graft is a major step in this direction. We are convinced that this expertise will give them a significant competitive advantage and allow them to better support their clients throughout their careers,” said the management of Says Lounge.

This training course is led by Dr. Arthur Movsisyan, a leading figure in the field of hair restoration surgery. With over twenty-five years of experience in Mauritius and a background as a plastic surgeon in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dr.

Movsisyan brings exceptional expertise and credibility. He is also the only active member of the ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) in Mauritius, a distinction that testifies to his commitment to excellence and research. During this exchange, he shared his vision of an approach combining hairdressing and medical expertise: “It is crucial to create synergy between our two worlds to offer superior customer service. As the hairdresser is the first link in the care chain, it is essential to properly prepare them for this guiding role,” added Dr. Arthur Movsisyan.

The conference program covered a comprehensive range of essential topics, including presentations on the different forms of hair loss, their causes—whether genetic, hormonal, or nutritional—their visible symptoms, and their potential progression. Dr. Movsisyan highlighted preventative methods and best practices for maintaining healthy hair, valuable advice that future hairdressers can share with their clients.

The students learned to differentiate between temporary hair loss, often linked to stress or seasonal changes, and more serious cases requiring medical attention. Finally, a comprehensive introduction to hair transplantation was provided, with a detailed explanation of modern techniques, such as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and a presentation of the realistic results to expect from such a procedure.

This awareness-raising initiative reflects New Hair Graft's vision to raise the standards of the profession. In addition to the theoretical training, a question-and-answer session allowed students to interact directly with Dr. Movsisyan, transforming the meeting into a truly enriching and inspiring exchange.
