7 Reasons to Choose Mauritius for Your Hair Transplant
Choosing where to have your hair transplant is about far more than price. It means deciding who you will trust with a transformation that will stay with you for years.

A growing number of patients, particularly from Europe, are looking beyond clinics close to home to find the right balance between medical expertise, quality of care and a calm, well-supported patient journey. Here is why Mauritius has become a premium destination for hair transplant surgery, and above all, how to check this for yourself rather than simply taking our word for it.
1. Medical expertise you can verify
A beautiful destination does not make a good transplant. What matters is the surgeon's hand, and that is the one criterion that truly deserves your attention.
At New Hair Graft, the procedure is performed by an ISHRS-certified surgeon, the only one in the Indian Ocean region, with over 25 years of experience and more than 10,000 transplants performed.
What "ISHRS member" actually means
It is worth being precise here, because the term is often used loosely. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, founded in 1993, is the world's leading professional society in the field. However, its membership includes several categories with very different requirements.
The Fellow and Member categories require a medical degree, a current licence to practise, a letter of recommendation and a commitment to continuing education, with credits to be earned through in-person training. Other categories, by contrast, are open to surgical assistants who do not hold a medical degree.
In other words, a clinic that displays "ISHRS" without specifying the category tells you very little. The right question is: which category, and for which practitioner, by name? The ISHRS provides a public online directory, so you can check for yourself.
Four questions to ask, whichever clinic you choose
They are recommended by the ISHRS, and they apply everywhere, including with us:
- Who will assess my hair loss and recommend treatment, and what are their qualifications?
- Who will be involved during surgery, what role will each person play, and what is their training?
- Will any unlicensed individuals perform the incisions or harvest the grafts?
- Is everyone involved covered by professional liability insurance?
A reputable clinic will answer all four questions openly. A clinic that avoids them is already telling you something.
2. A medical framework regulated by law, and verifiable online
This is the most tangible argument, and curiously, the one Mauritian providers highlight the least.
In Mauritius, a private clinic cannot simply open its doors. The Private Health Institutions Act requires a licence issued by the Ministry of Health, restricts activity to the approved scope, and allows unannounced inspections of premises, medicine stocks and records.
For practitioners, the Medical Council of Mauritius, established in 1964, maintains public registers that can be consulted online: registered medical practitioners, registered specialists and approved visiting practitioners. It also publishes a code of ethics and has disciplinary procedures in place.
In practical terms, you can check from home, in just a few minutes, that the doctor named is properly registered and recognised as a specialist. Few low-cost destinations offer such direct verification.
Our centre is based within the C-Care private clinic in Grand Baie, part of one of the island's leading healthcare groups, with modern hospital facilities and medical oversight.
3. Genuinely good value for money
For equivalent expertise and standards, a hair transplant in Mauritius remains considerably more affordable than in Europe, with procedures from €1,800 and all-inclusive packages from €2,100, including return airport transfers and hotel nights.
This difference is not the result of cutting corners on quality, but of more favourable local operating costs.
A word of advice on method: compare what is actually included rather than the headline price. The procedure, the support, the next-day check-up, twelve months of follow-up, the logistics on site. A low price that stops at the clinic door is not cheaper, it is incomplete.
4. A setting that truly supports recovery
The days following a transplant call for rest and gentle care. In Mauritius, you recover in a calm environment with a pleasant climate, far from the stress of everyday life.
One useful caveat, and one you are unlikely to hear elsewhere: the tropical sun calls for particular care. Healing skin does not yet have its normal defences, and ultraviolet rays can cause lasting pigmentation. Direct sun exposure should be avoided for about a month. A loose, clean hat, shade and patience. This precaution is part of the written aftercare instructions we give you, and we would rather tell you before you travel.
5. Aftercare that follows your biological timeline, not your flight schedule
This is what most clearly distinguishes a clinic from a travel package, and it is easy to check.
The result of a transplant cannot be judged on day ten. The transplanted hairs shed between the second and eighth week, regrowth begins from the third month, and the full result emerges between the sixth and twelfth month. A service that ends when you board your flight home therefore stops before the result even exists.
New Hair Graft supports you before, during and after your procedure: a personalised diagnosis, care on site, a check-up the following day with your first hair wash carried out together, then remote post-operative follow-up with consultations scheduled at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.
Teleconsultation with standardised photographs is now documented as a valid follow-up tool, and one patients appreciate, but it does not replace a clinical examination in complex cases. That is why the option of returning in person matters.
6. English and French spoken fluently
Unlike some other destinations, there is no language barrier here. We communicate in English and French alike, with the same clarity.
This is not simply a matter of comfort, it is a medical issue. You understand every explanation and every aftercare instruction, and you can describe precisely what you are feeling. Health authorities also recommend obtaining your complete medical records so that you can share them with any healthcare professional you see afterwards. That, of course, means being able to read them.
7. 40 minutes from Réunion, 11 hours from Paris
For patients from the neighbouring island of Réunion, Mauritius is hardly a distant destination. The flight takes around 40 minutes, with daily connections. An in-person check-up at three or six months becomes a simple day trip, something that is quite simply impossible with a clinic five hours away by plane.
From Europe, the island is served by daily direct flights from Paris: around 11 hours of flying time, with a time difference of only two hours, which helps limit fatigue on the way home.
What low-cost hair transplant tourism has changed, and why it concerns you
It needs to be said, because it has become the main risk in the sector, and because it is not confined to any one country.
The ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, conducted among its members, reveals two telling figures. 59% of clinics reported black market activity in their city in 2024, compared with 51% in 2021. And repair procedures following such interventions accounted for an average of 10% of activity in 2024, compared with 6% in 2021. In three years, the share of corrective surgery has almost doubled.
The documented mechanism is not geographical. It is a business model: a doctor's qualifications are used to attract the patient, and the procedure is then in fact delegated to unlicensed technicians. The ISHRS points out that this pattern is seen in Turkey and Iran, but also in Western Europe and North America. The country is not the right variable. The real question is who is holding the instrument.
Let us be equally honest the other way, because alarmism serves no one. A review of 43 publications puts the overall complication rate for hair transplants at between 1.2% and 4.7%, and concludes that serious complications are rare in experienced hands. A well-performed hair transplant is a low-risk procedure. The issue is not the danger of the procedure itself, but the skill of the person performing it.
One final point of transparency: there are currently no reliable statistics comparing failure rates by country. The authors of a 2025 review describe it as a genuine data black hole. Be wary of any content that quotes a failure rate by destination: it is made up.
A destination that makes sense, provided you choose well
Choosing Mauritius for your hair transplant only makes sense if the medical expertise is there. That is precisely what sets a specialist clinic apart from a simple medical tourism offer: a rigorous diagnosis, the quality of the surgical work and reliable support over the long term.
Before anything else, the right first step remains the same: understanding your situation. A personalised hair diagnosis assesses your hair loss, examines the quality of your donor area, estimates the number of grafts required and confirms whether a transplant is truly the right solution for you.
